周六52 The Saturday Show for June 2, 2007

Has it really been…one year today? 52 shows that started good and kept getting better and better with each publication? You’d better believe it…and join us, as we’re joined by the gals and one of the ’suits’ (who knows more about naughty nightwear than all of us!).

Besides a ‘wok down memory lane’, what else is in store?

  1. Video is on the way, as *someone* took advantage of the open-bar on the flight to NYC and slept thru editing it
  2. Jenny’s headed to Orlando (Frank - control thyself)
  3. Amber can cry on cue
  4. Eileen has a few favorite listeners
  5. Steve offers up some saucy vocab
  6. A previous government official gets the death sentence
  7. How to take 15 people to Moganshan
  8. Guess who promotes his appearance in next month’s FHM?
  9. NYC Meetup - all listener generated (as long as it’s between the 7th and 11th of June)
  10. Aric says ‘goodbye’ to the Saturday Show & ‘thanks’ to ChinesePod

…now, we know those tears are actually of joy in the Jenny Zhu’s soon going to be Stateside, but lie and Aric a few of them are for him.

Thanks for a great year, Aric. Fly as high as you can, and if your wings start feeling a little heavy, look around, we’ll be hanging on behind you.

Good luck Aric! Can’t say I’m too surprised, but it looked like a fun and exciting job. CP is a good launching pad for several careers. I’ve enjoyed watching it happen from afar. If only everyone can have such an experience at least once in their lives.

  3. 3 RobAnt Jun 2nd, 2007 at 11:21 am

    Aric,

Truly sorry to read that you’re leaving (haven’t heard the announcement yet - still listening to this weeks show).

    Good luck for the future.

  4. 4 Steve@ChinesePod Jun 2nd, 2007 at 11:23 am

All the best from all of us at CPod Aric. The Saturday Show has been fun, but you’ve made a much bigger mark on CPod than just that (remember AudioRipple, and the first studio, and even the ‘Weird and Wonderful’ prototype recordings with Ken from July/August 2005?). We’ll be expecting to see great things from you and your new venture in the coming months.

    Good luck!
    Steve

Aric will be a huge loss to this successful show.

Does Chinesepod plan to continue with it?

Incidentally, this weeks show - prior to Aric’s announcement - was great.

  6. 6 'mickey' Jun 2nd, 2007 at 12:11 pm

    @robant
I totally agree and would like to ditto your statement.
Now what I am going to do with my Saturdays?

Good Luck to all the cast, it was a great ride.

Folks, my comments on this got a bit out of hand, so I made it into a blog entry. I hope you’ll come by and read it, and help me wish Aric a fond farewell.

As someone who has listened to every single Saturday Show, I’m very sad to see it go.

It’s been one of Chinesepod’s greatest assets (especially the more culture aspects of the show :) and one of the most useful podcasts that Chinesepod offers. Not to mention, it’s an absolute delight to listen to.

I feel like I’ve gotten to know Jenny, Aric and Colleen over the past year and I’ve had a ball.

Good luck with all your future endeavours Aric. Jenny, I listen to Chinesepod every day but I’ll miss your Saturday Show personality! And Colleen, the Saturday Show’s glory days were definitely when it was the three of you.

Thanks for the memories and all the best! You will be sorely missed!

  9. 9 Andrew M Jun 2nd, 2007 at 1:35 pm

Whoa… Whoa… Whoa…! What are you talking about your “last show?” I very surprised (disappointed and sad) because I thought you were in it for the long run (3 years minimum), Aric. And we can still find Jenny on Johnson & Johnson’s Bao Bao radio and/or Soulfire radio (not sure how to spell the names). What about finding Jenny Zhu on The Greatest Saturday Show in the World. Nobody said this show was going to be the last Saturday Show of ChinesePod. Is it? I thought you were currently looking for some ambitious female to replace Colleen. Has the world gone amuck? ChinesePod most definitely needs someone to carry on the torch that you, Aric and Jenny have ignited. The Saturday Show fits in wonderfully with the other learning material (not necessarily Chinese language related only) found at ChinesePod and for the most part is very entertaining. I sometimes think of you and Jenny as I do of Reggis and Kelly Rippa here in the US. The two of you were a perfect match for the show and one without the other was only sub-par. Oh no, I’m commenting in the past-tense, boohoo. Anyhow, I wish you the best, and hope you change your mind. Jenny, talk him out of it, please.

    All the best,
    Andrew M

I want to wish you the best in your next and future endeavors. I look forward to your drop-in visits so that you can keep the listeners updated with your latest news.

    Aric,
all the best from me, too. I think you proved here that of all your many talents being a host is where you absolutely stand out - and you should by all means expand on this. I hope we get to see your new shows on the web…just post the links in the Forum.

You certainly added spice and coolness to Chinesepod. Besides the Saturday Show I already miss your lesson intros. Some of those were brilliant.

By the way: I liked todays show very much (well except for the last 3 minutes with those shocker news…). It had all of the freshness in it that I was always looking enjoying so much during my Saturday breakfasts. Never missed one.

  12. 12 Rich Jun 2nd, 2007 at 9:55 pm

Definitely sad to hear that Aric is leaving. So what is the fate of the Saturday show? That wasn’t very clear…will we be able to come back here next week for a new, yet Aric-less, Saturday show? Or is it likely to be canned? It would be nice to know what the status is, as even though it was moved to extra.chinesepod.com, I still listen to it to grow closer to the CPod hosts and community. Please say that Jenny will still be doing something cultural here, even though I know from first-hand experience talking with her that she has lots of projects she could do too… it was an Aric going away notice, not Jenny or Saturday Show going away notice…right? right? but then what is the saturday show without Aric??

  13. 13 jenny zhu Jun 2nd, 2007 at 10:21 pm

Thank you everyone for your more than generous love in this past year, because of that, what started as a ‘backyard stroll’ turned into (Aric’s self-claimed) Greatest Saturday Show in the World.

As we all know Aric, it will be literally a split second until he concocts another greatest show in the world.

Aric and all TGSS-loving poddies, thanks for a great ride!

  14. 14 Hotpot Mike Jun 2nd, 2007 at 10:33 pm

Great show. Went out with a lot of class… well done. Totally respect your decision..

  15. 15 Hotpot Mike Jun 2nd, 2007 at 11:21 pm

Forgot to mention, TSS was indeed the glue that held CPod together.

  16. 16 excuter Jun 2nd, 2007 at 11:36 pm

is this the end (of the greatest saturday show in the world,Universe obove it and obove that)?
You´re kidding right like in todays cpod lesson it must be a Joke!
    please…

  17. 17 Steven (江启辉) Jun 3rd, 2007 at 1:02 am

No more Aric? Wow, it won’t be the same Saturday Show without the asqueen around. But you know, I really agree with your decision. You could tell that the show was straining to become something else, something apart from Chinesepod, so good luck with your new show! Um, I hope someone lets us know the name of this show of Aric’s…!

  18. 18 mona Jun 3rd, 2007 at 1:42 am

will there BE a Saturday Show without Aric AND Colleen?!?!?
…..or is this indeed the last of TGSSITW ever? :(

  19. 19 Gary Jun 3rd, 2007 at 3:09 am

    Aric,
The above submissions and Frank Fradella’s blog, have already expressed our gratitude and acknowledged your efforts, but I would still like to add a thank you.

Also, I would like to strongly disagree with yet another of your controversial statements- the final point you made on today’s show. I think alot of listeners would agree that you have made an excellent contribution to learning on C-pod. Learning is about creating an energetic atmosphere, attracting and bringing together a community of students with the mentors, and also reminding people about why it is we want to learn about chinese language, culture, people, ex-pats…….making it fun?????

Whether this is the end to the Saturday Show, or just the Saturday Show as we know it, let’s hope spirit continues, and we get to keep enjoying the efforts of everyone on the crew, in whatever venues they may be participating.

  20. 20 Bazza 白锐 Jun 3rd, 2007 at 3:59 am

Good luck Aric, hope we’ll still chance to hang out when I come over in October. :)

  21. 21 Joe Jun 3rd, 2007 at 4:57 am

I still haven’t been able to determine whether the Saturday show will be here next week. I hope that it is.

I am not cool, edgy, or hip, but I enjoyed the shows and Aric’s contributions. I left China in 1982 after a year as an exchange student. There were no cell phones, credit cards, edgy music, or discussion of the gay community. There was a campaign against “spiritual pollution.” Chinesepod and the Saturday Show have helped to modernize my Chinese and raised my awareness of the dramatic changes in Chinese society. If the show disappears altogether I will miss it greatly.

I enjoyed Aric’s various social and personal explorations. Some of them took me down memory lane. I got hooked on tobacco in China, and it took me years to get rid of the habit. I wish Aric well in all of his endeavors. I hope and expect that the Chinesepod team will continue rise to ever greater levels of success.

  22. 22 Rich Jun 3rd, 2007 at 1:17 pm

Another question… was there a video for this show? I didn’t see a link anywhere, yet Aric mentioned in the show that they would flash an address up on the screen for us or something. Am I blind, or is there no video? maybe I should just go search YouTube…

  23. 23 Kaixin Jun 3rd, 2007 at 5:06 pm

I guess nothing lasts forever… not even the best things.

Aric, I’m sad to see you go, but at the same time I wish that you get to do what you love and have the freedom to do it the way you want. I loved the Saturday Show and I listened to every single one of them. Thank you for a great year, I hope to hear from you in the future as well.

Best of luck for all your projects, I hope everything works out for you.

    万事如意!

I hope this means we will now have two fascinating podcasts to listen to.

  25. 25 TaiPan Jun 4th, 2007 at 12:13 am

    Aric,

Thanks for a year of great work. You’ve been an integral part of my enthusiasm about Chinesepod. In addition to the 52 podcasts, I love your radio-style intros to the lessons on Chinesepod. They make Chinesepod fun, distinguished and first class. The quality of that production value and the existence of The Saturday Show, are two important factors that have put Chinesepod far ahead of the competition.

Definitely keep everyone posted on where to find your other shows online. I have no doubt they’ll be a great success. I believe that you’ll help Chinesepod grow faster from without than from within, and the Chinesepod community will jumpstart the success of your new ventures with their support.

Jenny Zhu, how do you say Perfect Synergy and Win-Win in putonghua?

Aric, it’s sad to see you bounce, but hopefully we’ll see you …in the words of Adam Duritz… Round Here, Time and Time Again.

  26. 26 Aric Jun 4th, 2007 at 1:58 am

    Guys,

Many thanks for the kind words - it wasn’t an easy decision, but anyone following the past month or so shouldn’t be too surprised.

I have already set up a group of people who are going to be involved with the new show (still unnamed…AricPod? No wait - that was basically this one, hee hee) and we’ll start shooting when I get back.

As I’ve said a thousand times before, heaps of gratitude to ChinesePod, who provided a platform - especially to Ken, whom many know as the teacher, but few actually know what a generous and supportive mentor he’s been to me.

Lastly, thanks to all of you - I didn’t always take suggestions nicely, but in the end, you all helped shaped TSS, and from that, I’ll start another…one that I hope you all stop by and visit from time to time.

    See ya ’round.

    Aric

Looks like Jenny is away the first week I’m in China, luckily I’m there for 10 days but doesn’t look like I’ll get to see much of her.

  29. 29 excuter Jun 4th, 2007 at 9:45 pm

Let´s have a Voting somewhere for a new Jenny Zhu´s Saturday Show or a TSS with Jenny Zhu, Aric´s DJ friend (sorry If you read this I forgot your name) and the two of the TSS from last week (sorry forgot your names too).
The Greatest Saturday Show has to survive somehow !!!!

Aric please take care of the ongoing of this show while building up your new one and stop by anytime if you feel for it.
No need to wish you good luck, you sure will succeed with your future projects, but take care man. :-)

I am really sorry that Aric is leaving because he has inspired me to learn Chinese which is really hard but I am going to carry on anyway. I hope Jenny isn’t going to leave as well!

  32. 32 Hotpot Mike Jun 6th, 2007 at 8:29 am

Anyone at CPod clued in yet that the style of text used for the TSS link is typically used for copyright notices and footnotes? Even the name of the style used is called foot_2. I challenge you to find *any site* on the internet with links as discrete as yours. Any Site. Insanity.

  33. 33 Hotpot Mike Jun 6th, 2007 at 10:32 am

Ok CPod Suits, how about this. If you can find a link anywhere on the ENTIRE Internet that is more unnoticeable than the link to ChinesePod - Extra, then I’ll go away and shut-up forever. If you can’t.. well, there’s a big blank space in the lower left corner of the ChinesePod front page that I’m expecting to see the TSS logo on next week. I’ll check back in 24 hours to see if you’ve found anything (not that I actually expect you to play this game).

    p.s. Bazaa, no helping.

  34. 34 Frank Jun 6th, 2007 at 12:29 pm

You know, Mike—and I have nothing to back up this hypothesis—but it’s possible that Aric let them know some time ago that he was looking to get out. They might have seen V3 as a way to transition out of the show, and just make the “extra” section for any other little thing they wanted to add later on.

All I can say is that from all I know of these people, I don’t get the impression that they’re careless or oblivious. The link is the size it is, in the place it is, because that’s what they wanted.

We can only wonder why. :-)

  35. 35 Aric Jun 6th, 2007 at 2:03 pm

    Hotpot Mike.

Actually I tried to get that spot for the show and it didn’t fly - am still not sure why, but, as Frank said, we’re not dealing with careless folk.

Frank, to be honest, I didn’t want to get out until after the V3 switch - the shows were at their highest of popularity and rising…until (insert Darth Vader march theme here - kidding). Although, I wished the show was big enough to constitute a site change, ha ha ha.

Again - it all comes down to this:

CPod is a language aquisition site. TSS accidentally became huge and I threw in with that, my (slightly large) ego. When it was on the way up, I was throwing everything I had into it (Jenny & Colleen & producers, videographers, editors, etc) and it was working. With the site change came a more focused CPod - one that didn’t want to throw in as many resources into the show as I did, so I stepped out, to start my own. No hard feelings at all - promise.

So again - I’m not sure what they’re doing with the show, I didn’t give them much notice (about 10 days), as I would never do a show I wasn’t cool with - so you’ll have to wait and see.

    Aric

  36. 36 pharmine Jun 6th, 2007 at 4:55 pm

Aric, thank you for hosting TGSSITW for the past year, and I’m very much looking forward to your new shows.

I have no idea what the powers that be at ChinesePod are thinking about, but I don’t think the current format of TSS is incompatible with the concept of V3. On the contrary, the sense of community and festivity that TSS has been creating is IMHO what the so-called Web 2.0 is all about, and has a great potential for broad application. SpanishSense, for example, can also have something like the Saturday Show. And this is certainly worth at least a post or two in the Praxis blog.

  37. 37 Hotpot Mike Jun 7th, 2007 at 11:18 am

…. still waiting for someone to find a link as unnoticeable as ChinesePod Extra… waiting… waiting…

  38. 38 Aric Jun 7th, 2007 at 11:23 am

    Mike.

You do bring up a good point; I hadn’t noticed, but it sure is grey down there between ‘contact us’ and ‘terms of use’.

Can we get an orange at least? How about mauve? Somethin!

  39. 39 Hotpot Mike Jun 7th, 2007 at 12:15 pm

… great idea, or go half way and bust out a pale lavender. and how come that mutilated picture that slightly resembles a wrench (what is that thing?) beside Labs gets 5 pixels of blue.

  42. 42 Bazza 白锐 Jun 8th, 2007 at 6:13 am

    Hotpot Mike, how about this?

The world’s smallest website: www.guimp.com LOL

  43. 43 Hotpot Mike Jun 8th, 2007 at 8:46 am

    Bazza,

Great little site.. very cool. Pong was fun, and that people game is addictive.

..but, obviously, CPod still owns the world’s most unnoticeable link, which from now on I’m going to refer to as the world’s most pathetic attempt at a link. Still waiting to be proven wrong…

  44. 44 Bazza 白锐 Jun 8th, 2007 at 3:21 pm

Hotpot Mike, can you find your way to the forum from the homepage? ;)

  45. 45 James Theron Jun 8th, 2007 at 9:23 pm

On the way to the forum… CP home page (not logged in), on page bottom in a very light grey font click “Learn More”, next to “Support” click “Community”, click on “Forum News” or one of the forum topics.

Easy peazy. ;) Note the “Forum News” link doesn’t appear to be a link unless you mouse over it.

  46. 46 Hotpot Mike Jun 8th, 2007 at 10:43 pm

Bazza, no.. honestly I thought the forum was no longer linked to from CPod. Just followed James’ links and still didn’t know what I was looking at when I saw the Forum News page… CPod thinks new topics are called Forum News?? Obviously should be called Latest Forum Topics but that’s beside the point - the site integration is, needless to say, atrocious.

  47. 47 James Theron Jun 9th, 2007 at 8:27 am

Speaking of links from the new site… What’s happening with the Chinesepod Wiki? It didn’t make it to the ‘Extra’ page, nor can I find a link from the main site. However, it is still online at wiki.chinesepod.com.

  48. 48 AuntySue Jun 9th, 2007 at 5:11 pm

It’s all what we Aussies call Tall Poppy Syndrome, but you know it when we do it. As soon as something threatens to become very popular with the students, its neglected, cast aside, hidden, eliminated, left in a corner of the basement to seem to die of its own accord. Rather than being honest about it, it’s given an insulting token link or a treasure hunt style location, kept on the agenda to appease the masses but tied permanently to the bottom of a constantly growing list of other priorities. It’s a cowardly way of avoiding finding the words to say piss off.

Now tell me I’m wrong, and please explain why history keeps repeating, and why community seems to be valued in words but not in actions. Is it learning on our terms, but community only on yours? Just tell us straight before we waste too much free labour trying to help you to build your business with our community efforts only to have them wasted.

  49. 49 pharmine Jun 9th, 2007 at 10:49 pm

I think ChinesePod tend to take a let-bygones-be-bygones type of attitude. They are more interested in current and future developments rather than the past. In other words, they want to forget the past.

This reminds me of the day when the Japanese version of ChinesePod suddenly disappeared without any previous notifications, or more recently, the day when, with the introduction of V3, several past lessons of ChinesePod suddenly disappeared without any previous notifications.

  50. 50 mona Jun 10th, 2007 at 6:48 pm

    AuntiSue, those are harsh words!
I must say I share your sentiments and have been quite disappointed with some of the recent CPod developments. But by the same token we also have to acknowledge that even the best ideas sometimes need to be rethought - and that involves some experimentation. It seems (to me) that CPod is going through a bit of an experimental phase atm - not least to get feedback from us. Possibly not the most elegant way to go about it, but probably effective. Let’s give them some time to digest and incorporate all our comments……I’m sure they’ll turn around and realise that while it’s the CP HQ that provides the platform, it is the community that holds it all together and helps guide the whole process in a certain direction, to everyone’s benefit.
I sincerely hope so, at any rate!

  51. 51 ken Jun 12th, 2007 at 4:22 am

    Frank said:
“I don’t get the impression that they’re careless or oblivious”

Even the best minds make mistakes. Even the most shrewd are capable of having thier emotions overtake their reason. I am not saying that this was the case here, but having a resource like TSS and treating it the way it was treated with teh transition to v3… Well I have to question how rational the decision was.

  52. 52 Hotpot Mike Jun 12th, 2007 at 8:11 am

Ok.. the pattern is pretty obvious here…

    1) The Saturday Show - most unnoticeable link on the internet (still waiting to be proven wrong)
    2) Bloggers - technically you’re only linked from dead sections of CPod or deep down on the off-site Praxis blog
    3) Forum.. if community is so valued why is it one of the smallest links on the users home page? Apparently 15000 Chinese language related searchable posts was a threat to the Connect section message abyss.. great way to treat the most dedicated users

Somebody sure seems bent on re-structuring the community their way. I don’t know, maybe your backs were against the wall and you thought these steps were absolutely necessary… but could you at least have finished your grade 6 intro to website design course first? (well, you do have the world’s most unnoticeable link).
    :)

  53. 53 Rich Jun 12th, 2007 at 2:30 pm

Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever read so much about “world’s smallest link” in all my web-surfing and web-programming career. I think we got the point Mike. :)

Before I got to Ken’s post I wondered if ChinesePod staff even reads the posts here much or at all, but then again, what is done is done.

While V3 brought in avatars and tying posts to accounts, I still feel, after trying to get into it with even connection feeds and lesson feeds, it still lacks. I’m not an expert but speaking of all these links being hard to find, my only way to sum up this lack of community is it seems like there is no connection between lessons like there were before… now it just seems like a mesh of different lessons and I’m gasping for air to keep up with all the posts, unliek before (I used to love just the “Lastest post” list and the “Top Post” list… that keep it simple to what I should read.

And this post probably won’t even be read by many now that this tread is over a week old and no new Saturday shows to bring people back. Yet I have to say, in my first days of finding ChinesePod, it was TSS that grabbed my attention as to what makes CP not another on-line text book, but something with perosnality… and now it is gone.

I have to laugh that ARIC got WEILI to study Chinese? Uh, I’ve been always hoping that Jenny and CP would get Aric to learn Chinese… ha ha… but that was more of the comical part of it all… that the “director” wasn’t much of a Chinese learner (and yet, I bet he played down his Chinese knowledge a bit, just to make us feel better about our Chinese, right Aric? :) And of course to be able to play around with Strong Word of the Week, which we will miss)

Well, I have been around ChinesePod as much because of these changes. I do hope that there will be a V4 soon, not in the sense of a new web page design, but in community design…. something is missing from my days one year ago that first got me hooked on ChinesePod. Whatever it was, BRING IT BACK! :) (And uh, bring back TSS too… let us into the personal lives of our teachers here… that is what made this great I think)

    -Rich

  54. 54 Frank Jun 13th, 2007 at 3:58 am

Rich, Aric absolutely downplayed his Chinese ability, though his focus was mainly on Shanghaiese. When I was hanging out with him, he banted about like a native. The boy’s got mad skills.

  55. 55 Lantian Jun 14th, 2007 at 9:44 am

Hi Rich, I’m still reading. Interesting, it all is I say. :D

  56. 56 Hotpot Mike Jun 14th, 2007 at 12:30 pm

Rich.. that wasn’t CPod Ken.. I believe that was Scientific Ken.

Yeah I went a little overboard on the most unnoticeable link. Obviously, nobody could prove me wrong - hypothetically, if a less noticeable link did in fact exist, it’d either be completely invisible, or so hard to spot that no ordinary human being could ever find it.

But to use such a link to point to TSS… what an incredible injustice.

From the dissappointing lack of communication from the CPod team, it seems like there will be no future TSS shows (and indeed the extra site feels a bit now like it’s been “extra-communicated”), does anyone know how we’ll be able to find Aric’s new show when he starts it up?

  58. 58 Aric Jun 15th, 2007 at 6:08 am

    Al.

The fact that you’d even second guess my self-promotion makes me wonder if we really know eachother at all.

    A

  59. 59 Al Jun 15th, 2007 at 8:09 am

Aric, you know it’s been getting a little quiet around here without it… :o)

Ok Bazza, I’m at my wits’ end here and need some help. I’m giving you 48 hours to find a link on par with the ChinesePod - Extra link. Any type of link is eligible for submission, including links to Terms of Service, Disclaimers, EULA’s, and superscripted numbers on footnotes. If I don’t hear from you within 48 hours, I’ll assume you failed and from now on are posting under the pseudonym ‘Dave’. Don’t ask me why.

    ChinesePod is dead!

    RIP

Seriously, it would be interesting to know whether Cpod subscriptions have increased or decreased over the past couple of weeks.

The loss of The Saturday Show is a sad one for me. So much so that I have put the Yahoo Chinesepod Group on the back burner. But it is interesting to note that since doing that,a few days ago, 5 new members have suddenly appeared!

  62. 62 Simon Jun 16th, 2007 at 6:23 pm

I must as well admit that I’m incredibly sad to see Aric and (presumably) The Saturday Show go. Listening to TSS every week was, in a way, motivation and a reminder why I’m studying Chinese. I’ve been living in China for about 8 months now, but before then, TSS was my one real glimpse into modern Chinese culture.

I’ll follow Aric wherever he goes next, but I do wish it would have been possible for him to stay on as a part of ChinesePod.

Looks like I’m fighting for a lost cause here.. so, it’s time to move on. I’ve been a little sarcastic and insulting at times, but my only desire was to make CPod a better place. When a move so blatently ridiculous is made, it’s pretty hard to ignore. But, as Scientific Ken said, even the best minds make mistakes.. so, I’d best leave it at that.

I want to echo the many posts here that TSS will be sorely missed! Even though I am no longer cool, edgy or hip (that was 20 years ago ;-)), it was still awesome to feel a strong sense of community around the TSS. Now a middle aged businessman, the way I consume CPod is 1-2 intermediate/upper-int lessons a MONTH. It takes a lot of repetition to pound new material into this aging brain. But the weekly TSS kept me “linked in” to the CPod community, and made me want to keep tuning in for both the academic lessons and the news!

I hope TSS will find a way to continue…

    Cheers,
    /Jim

… but guess what, I’m not going away until you show the bloggers some respect. Burying TSS is one thing, but the bloggers is where I draw the line. Whatever happened to the blog idea of mine a CPod staffer called fantastic a few months ago?

  66. 66 bob Jun 21st, 2007 at 8:52 am

I don’t think CPod thought through their handling of TSS very well. TSS is what kept me coming back even when my workload at school was so heavy and my brain so fried I didn’t feel up to a language lesson. I’m very sorry to see it go.

Could someone post links to Aric’s other shows, etc., that were sometimes mentioned on TSS?

  67. 67 Conrad in Canada Jun 23rd, 2007 at 7:45 pm

I regret your decision to cancel TSS and fire Aric, during the last show it was mentioned that cpod must make money, then I would suggest charging a nominal fee for access to the xtra stuff, if all of us pitched in 5 bucks 3, 4 times a year, I am certain this would cover the operational cost and provide marketing for your cpod school. Learning chinese is not only about language, it is about history, culture, business customs, travelling and the exciting prospect of visiting on day,… prepared!

Hotpot Mike - Thanks for fighting the good fight, brother! Whether or not the folks at HQ agree or disagree with you (and others like you), I know that I’d be happy just to hear their thoughts on the matter.

bob - Trust me, when Aric’s new show is ready to go, we’ll ALL hear about it. He was just here in America, and he’ll likely need some time once he gets back to get the ball rolling. Remember, he won’t have access to the ChinesePod studio and equipment anymore. Give him some time. In the meantime, feel free to check out the Newbie blog! There’s a new weekly podcast over there you can check out. Just click on my name!

Conrad - Small correction, sir: Aric wasn’t fired. He chose to leave. This was a classic example of “creative differences.” Neither would bend, so they broke up. *sniff* It’s all very tragic.

Feel free to prove me wrong, anybody, but the links between the bloggers & forum, and CPod, is basically a one way street now, pointing to CPod. So, these community builders in the forum and blog are basically drawing the traffic, re-directing it to CPod, and then being left in the dust. Might be a good business decision in the short term, but not so hot in the long term. All I’m saying is brotherhood is a two-way street.. thank you Malcolm X.

So, maybe you’re exploring alternate home pages, i.e. netvibes, etc, that will completely blow us away 6 months from now, and link the community seamlessly. But, in just 2 minutes with some simple html code, you could build a two-way street, without any technological breakthroughs. How about it?

Saw this about Jenny going to Orlando in October:

    Jenny’s a growing star!

Here’s looking at you, old Extra site. Officially de-linked from ChinesePod. Now you are free.

Is ChinesePod worth one good man’s podcast? We believed it once. Make us believe it again. He was a soldier of ChinesePod. Honor him.

  72. 72 Rich Jul 16th, 2007 at 5:15 pm

Yeah, will anyone new ever know about TSS? Will we even remember? I have the whole collection on a DVD now, but collecting dust, but alas, no new ones, I haven’t listened to one of the few ways that remind me why I’m so interested in China in the first place… RIP TSS

  73. 73 Al Jul 22nd, 2007 at 8:23 am

So, has Aric started his new show yet? Can’t find anything on Google.

  74. 74 Hotpot Mike Aug 5th, 2007 at 9:09 am

Hey Al, if you haven’t heard yet, Aric has launched his new show… The Shanghai Show.

  75. 75 tiantianxuexi Dec 30th, 2007 at 1:01 pm

This sudden ending was such a surprise!! I know I’m a little behind, but I just started listening to the Saturday Show over the last few days (even though you guys were on my ipod for about 6 months) and I went nearly straight through all 52 episodes. I’m on my winter vacation here in New York, USA and the saturday show was keeping me company during the last few days when I had pretty much nothing to do. I really felt like i got to know chinesepod (and the people behind it), as well as Shanghai, better through listening to this show.
Thank you so much for the laughs and the entertainment! Good luck chinesepod and aric! 加油!!
